Buying a watch online is easier when you know what to check before paying. Start with fit, movement and clear product information, then compare the seller’s delivery and return conditions. This checklist explains how to buy a watch online without relying on a single photograph or a model name.
1. Decide how you will wear the watch
Think about a normal week. Will the watch sit under a shirt cuff, spend most of the day at a desk or accompany you outdoors? A slim case may feel more comfortable with fitted sleeves, while a larger dial can be easier to read. Choose a design you will enjoy wearing regularly, rather than buying on appearance alone.
Set a total budget before browsing. Include delivery charges, possible import costs, bracelet adjustment and any accessories you need. A lower advertised price is only one part of the final cost.
2. Measure your wrist and check more than case diameter
Use a flexible tape measure around the place where you normally wear a watch. You can also use a strip of paper and measure it against a ruler. Our wrist measurement guide explains the process.
Next, check case diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length and the strap or bracelet’s adjustment range. Diameter describes the width of the case; lug-to-lug describes its length along your wrist. Two watches with the same diameter can fit differently because their lugs, thickness and bracelet shapes differ.
- Compare the dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable.
- Ask for the lug-to-lug measurement if the listing does not provide it.
- Check whether the bracelet can be sized for your wrist and whether spare links are included.
- Look at wrist photographs alongside close-up product images.

3. Understand the movement before choosing
Check whether the watch is quartz, automatic or manually wound. Quartz models commonly use a battery. Automatic mechanical watches use a rotor to wind the mainspring as the watch moves; they can stop when their stored energy runs out. Manually wound watches require winding according to the maker’s instructions.
Ask for the movement type and any available model details in writing. If you rotate between several watches, consider whether you are comfortable resetting a mechanical watch after time off the wrist. Our automatic vs quartz guide compares the everyday trade-offs.
4. Read the specifications and examine the photographs
A useful listing should explain what you will receive. Check the case material, crystal, movement, dimensions, strap material and included accessories. Separate documented specifications from general marketing phrases. If a detail matters to you, ask before ordering.
Look for views of the dial, side of the case, case back, clasp and strap. Ask whether photographs show the exact variant you selected. Confirm the dial colour, case finish, strap and any options again at checkout.
A brand name, logo, packaging photograph or unusually low price does not establish authenticity. If you are buying a branded watch, ask what evidence of authenticity, condition and provenance is available. For a substantial purchase, consider an independent assessment before committing.
5. Check water resistance and care requirements
Do not assume a watch is suitable for swimming because it has a sporty appearance or a screw-down crown. Check the specific model’s stated water resistance and its care instructions. If the rating or condition is unclear, keep it away from water until you obtain reliable guidance.
For a used watch, ask about service history and any available pressure-test results. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for winding, setting the date, cleaning and storage. Avoid using a general online guide as a substitute for model-specific instructions.
6. Review delivery, payment and returns
Before payment, find the seller’s contact details and read the policies. Check dispatch time separately from estimated transit time. Confirm tracking arrangements, the destination countries served and who is responsible for any import duties or taxes.
- Read the return deadline and the conditions for eligibility.
- Check who pays return postage and where returns must be sent.
- Ask how damaged, incorrect or missing deliveries are handled.
- Check the payment provider’s applicable terms rather than assuming every transaction has the same protection.
- Keep the product description, order confirmation and relevant correspondence.

Your final watch-buying checklist
Before placing an order, confirm these five points: the dimensions fit your wrist, the movement suits your routine, the specifications describe your chosen variant, any authenticity claims have appropriate evidence, and the delivery and return conditions are clear.
